['skæpə 'fləʊ], große Meeresbucht zwischen den südlichen Orkneyinseln, Schottland; mit Erdölterminal Flotta. - In beiden Weltkriegen wichtiger Stützpunkt der britischen Kriegsmarine; 1956 geschlossen. Nach Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde in Scapa Flow der Kern der deutsch Hochseeflotte interniert, Führer des 74 Einheiten umfassenden Verbandes war Konteradmiral Ludwig von Reuter (* 1869, ✝ 1943). Auf dessen Befehl erfolgte am 21. 6. 1919 die Selbstversenkung der Schiffe und Boote, um sie beim drohenden Scheitern der Versailler Friedensverhandlungen nicht in britische Hände fallen zu lassen. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg versenkte Korvettenkapitän Günther Prien (* 1908, ✝ 1941) hier mit seinem U-Boot am 14. 10. 1939 das britische Schlachtschiff »Royal Oak« (833 Tote).
